Should I Go for a Convertible or Hardtop?
Wednesday, March 12, 2014
If you are planning to buy a car anytime soon, the first question that you may be struggling with is whether to buy a convertible or a hardtop. Driving a hardtop has its advantages and safety features, but convertible cars are not far behind. Let’s take a look at some of the advantages of both types.
Should You Buy a Convertible?
Convertibles are classy. You get a warm fuzzy feeling while cruising around in one. Earlier convertibles had a soft top which wasn’t very reliable. There is always a chance that thieves can steal from a car with a soft top. Also, the tops tend to leak over time, letting in rain water. However, along came the hardtop convertibles. They present most of the advantages of a regular hard top and they are just as much fun to drive as a soft top convertible.
Nothing beats going for a long highway drive in a convertible. You feel like you’re one with nature. In addition, you could use the extra sunlight. After all, sunlight produces vitamin D in your body. Once you are back in the city, you can put the top back on to escape the noise. The only disadvantage with most hardtop convertibles is the trunk space. Once the top is down, you can’t store much in the car’s trunk.
Is a Hardtop the Better Option?
Hardtop cars have better safety features than convertibles. The pillars provide extra support to the roof should there ever be a roll over situation. Also, hardtop cars are lighter in weight. This is because convertibles lack the mid-pillar which provides support. To compensate for the missing mid-pillar, extra reinforcements are added. This makes the car heavier, putting more stress on the engine and results in a lower gas mileage.
Both convertibles and hardtops have certain advantages. Selecting one of the two depends purely on your preference. Now that you have a clear idea about the advantages of both, making a decision will be easier. Choose wisely as you will drive the car you select for a while.
