How to Beat the Winter Blues

It’s cold, it’s gross and it’s dark. You don’t want to go outside. You just want to stay inside, be warm and forget that winter is upon us. Have you ever felt this way? Have you ever wished for a warm vacation or to be teleported to another location when faced with another long cold Canadian winter? Well, if you have, don’t worry, you are not alone. Each and every year, many Canadians dread the thought of shoveling snow, worrying about poor road conditions and fighting to get to work safely. Not to mention the amount of clothing that you have to have (gloves, mitts, toques, boots, snow pants and heavy jackets). However, there is a way that you can get out these winter blues, and life does still happen even though it’s cold and dreary out there.
So…What to do? First, the best thing you can do is to change your mindset. Winter is inevitable nearly in every location in Canada, and some are hit harder than other areas. So, we must deal with it, it’s as simple as that. Trying to hide from winter does not make it go away, nor does it help our mental anguish as we lay inside, under our comforters trying to will Caribbean temperatures upon us. If you have troubles due to the lack of sunlight, you may want to invest in a lamp specifically designed to give you more daylight hours!.
One thing you can do is to embrace winter and all it has to offer. Winter is a fun, refreshing time to get outdoors and to feel alive. You can pick many activities to choose from, all ranging from taking a drive in the crisp sunshine to bombing down a ski hill at 30km an hour. The choice is yours, but you must know your options before heading out there. For those that don’t want to embrace the outdoors, then why not take this time to head to the theatre, take in the arts and entertainment or simply do those things that you don’t take the time to do around the house in other parts of the years. Setting small goals will help you to stay focused, and before you know it, winter will be over!
Take up a new activity! Whether that be playing a sport indoors (such as squash) or cross country skiing, it will give you a new lease on life, trying something new!
If none of these appeal to you, then you can always book a trip away from Winter to escape it all. This is also a good method to set goals, and plan your time away at your destination. Many people travel each and every winter, and the nice thing upon returning is that you will feel refreshed and the daylight hours will have increased.
So, this winter, don’t get stuck with the winter blues! Know that it will be soon be here, and figure out how you may deal with it earlier than later!
