Halloween Celebration in Canada

Wednesday, October 31, 2012

Halloween, although not viewed as a holiday in Canada, can be seen as a festive time (and practically a holiday to all kids that love candy).  Halloween in Canada is celebrated on October 31st every year.  Traditional Halloween activities in Canada include trick-or-treating, dunking for apples, festive parties, visits to haunted houses, costume parties, telling scary stores, horror movies,  witches, goblins, ghosts and  as well as carving jack-o-lanterns (pumpkins).

A Brief History of Halloween

Halloween gets its history as being the night before All Saints Day and incorporates traditions from pagan harvest festivals and festivals honoring the dead.  This tradition has continued in Canada, and it’s the one day of the year that it’s okay and socially acceptable to be scared, or to be scary.  Halloween conjures up images of creepy stories, ewey gooey food, ghost walks, pranks and sometimes, creepy people (with their eerie costumes).

How Do People Celebrate Halloween in Canada?

Halloween Symbols

What do you think of when you think of Halloween?  Some symbols may come to mind; black bats, spiders, cats, cobwebs, haunted houses, graveyards, the colors orange and black, costumes or ghosts.

Halloween is a very festive time of year, especially if you like to decorate.  So get in the spirit for the fall and enjoy Halloween and all it has to offer!
